BICEPS-ARM connection types

1. Standard 20 pins JTAG connector

  • JTAG debugging
  • 6 pins lost for debugging

2. Brendes low-cost 40 pins high density connector

  • No pins lost for debugging
  • real-time trace and port emulation
  • standard pin header
  • small size

It is recommended to use the Brendes debug connector in the PCB layout instead of the standard JTAG connector. It should be located near to the CPU.

Required PCB space is reduced and the cost of the connector are not increased. But as main advantage the developer has two options now:

  1. Work with every JTAG adapter (BICEPS, Ulink or others) by use of a small converter
  2. Debug with real-time trace, if it is necessary. I/O pins needed for debug signals can be emulated.

If no real-time trace is used, adjacent contacts of pins 1-20 are connected by bridges or jumpers. For simple JTAG debugging it's enough to use pins 21-40 of the connector (reduction to half size).

3. ARM 38 pins Mictor SMD connector

  • 16 pins lost for debugging
  • real-time trace

4. Vertical adapter without debug connector

The BICEPS vertical adapter is mounted directly on the microcontroller and connects the debug signals top down. The signals are separated from the board and connected directly to the BICEPS-ARM emulator. The advantages are:

  • No debug connector necessary
  • No board space required
  • No change in board layout
